Dr. Andrew Jacono was featured in Town and Country discussing a trend in family members and plastic surgery.
Few things have changed as much during the pandemic as family life. The majority of people had been unable to visit their families. Some families however were holed up with their relatives for the better part of two years. In both cases, people have found themselves sprouting new wrinkles and worry lines.
It’s no wonder that a staggering number of families have decided to bite the bullet and get plastic surgery together.
“Recently, a lot of relatives and spouses have come in together to see me,” says Dr. Jacono. “In fact, next week, I’m doing surgery on a husband, a wife, and their daughter on the same day. The husband and wife are getting facelifts, and their daughter is getting a rhinoplasty. I also have another set of cases coming up: a grandmother, a mother, and a daughter. The grandmother and mother are getting facelifts, and their daughter, who’s in her early forties, is getting her eyelids done.”
Many families were given quarantines, pandemic precautions, and nothing but time to deconstruct their faces in the mirror. It’s no surprise that all manner of grown professionals and their close relatives have decided to undergo cosmetic surgery. In some ways, this trend exemplifies the unseen benefits of COVID times. Such as, people becoming closer than they ever have been.
“For siblings who usually live apart, getting surgery can be a really cool experience,” continues Dr. Jacono. “you don’t normally stay with your brother or sister for two or three weeks. I’ve heard a lot of stories about what shows patients have binge-watched, and how they’ve gone through childhood photo albums. People have been able to do things they otherwise wouldn’t get the chance to do, and they’re enjoying it.”
As positive as the rise in family plastic surgeries have been, some doctors have noticed that certain dynamics can make consultations more complicated to navigate.
“Recently, I had quite a memorable consult,” says Dr. Jacono. “A matriarch in her seventies brought in her 52-year-old daughter. The mother wanted her daughter to get a facelift. The daughter seemed open to it, but her mother was literally driving the consult and telling her that, if she was going to get a facelift, she might as well pile on a bunch of other tweaks. Generally, that sort of attitude can make it more difficult for me to do my job well, and to satisfy my patients’ needs.”
At the same time, however, Dr. Jacono has noticed that, for every fraught consultation, there is a plethora of immensely constructive ones. On average, family members who get surgery together are happier and more comfortable because they have encouragement along the way. Normally, patients get surgery alone, and although they may have outside help and care, they often have to cope with the emotional difficulties of recovery by themselves.
Many of these new, multigenerational nip-and-tuckers are treating simultaneous surgical experiences with all of the excitement of a major family milestone.
“A lot of my patients see the opportunity to get surgery together as a celebration,” says Dr. Jacono. “They want to relish the experience because the last few years have been so full of anxiety. Their philosophy is: why not let loose and enjoy looking better than ever? Life is too short.”
Perhaps nobody could have expected that plastic surgery for families would become an alternative to vacationing, but reality is often stranger than fiction. So, why not do something big, bold, and exciting for your family and yourself while you have the time?
