Plastic surgeons perform various techniques and approaches to breast reduction surgery. During your consultation, our surgeons will discuss with you and select the most suitable surgical approach for you.
Choose from these three main techniques for your breast reduction surgery:
We choose the technique based on the extent of the procedure, the patient’s body type, and their desired outcome.
In some cases, we will perform a breast reduction using only liposuction. This is a less invasive procedure and has some advantages. The scars from liposuction breast reduction are virtually invisible and the results are long-lasting. However, this technique is suitable for patients who need a minor reduction in breast size and experience minimal sagging.
We do not recommend this approach for patients with larger sagging breasts, who want a significant amount of tissue removed.
This procedure is best suited for patients who require a moderate amount of breast size reduction and whose breasts are sagging.
Our surgeons begin by creating an incision around the areola. Then, make another incision that runs vertically from the areola to the crease beneath the breasts. Combined, these incisions create the shape of a lollipop, which is how it got its name. Once our surgeons make the incisions, they remove the excess breast tissue and fat.
This allows them to reshape the smaller breasts internally. Lastly, we elevate the breasts to their new position. Typically, there is some visible scarring from this procedure. However, our patients generally find it convenient to hide under a bikini top or a bra.
For the anchor breast reduction (inverted-T), we will create three incisions. The first two incisions mirror the vertical breast reduction. We then create a third incision along the crease of the breast, forming an “anchor” shape. We recommend this for patients with a significant amount of breast tissue and fat, and a considerable amount of sagging.
The scarring is similar to the vertical breast reduction, with the addition of the extra scar located inside the crease. We recommend that patients follow the after-surgery care guidelines. They typically see the scars dramatically fade within a year and can easily conceal them under clothing and beachwear.
Following your breast reduction surgery, we will bandage your incisions and you will wear a surgical bra over your chest. This support bra will help to keep the swelling down and offer support for the breasts as they heal. We also recommend that you have someone available to drive you home.
Many patients feel a considerable amount of soreness and discomfort for the first few days. Our surgeons may prescribe pain medication to help keep you comfortable during the initial recovery period. We recommend that you gently place ice packs on top of the bandages, to help with any discomfort.
Recovery time varies between patients, but most can return to light work duties and even drive. Avoid physical activities for the first 3 to 4 weeks following your procedure, especially if they are strenuous. This will help the incisions to heal properly and ensure the best possible results.
If you are suffering from overly large breasts that cause physical or emotional distress, you might be a good candidate. Patients should be in generally good physical health and have realistic expectations for their surgical outcome. Women who smoke should be willing to temporarily stop, prior to the surgery, as well as during the recovery process. During your consultation, we will discuss your issues and determine the best surgical combination to meet your desired goals.
