Information About Rhinoplasty for Teenagers in New York, NY with Dr. Andrew Jacono
Teen Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes and restructures the nose of a teenager. First, incisions are made to access the bone and cartilage support system. Most incisions are made within the nose and are invisible. In some cases, an incision is made in the sliver of skin separating the nostrils.
Next, precise amounts of bone and cartilage are removed, added to, or rearranged. This produces a newly shaped nasal structure. Tissue is then re-draped over the new framework, and the incisions are closed. Dr. Jacono never breaks the nose during rhinoplasty.
There is no “best age” for Rhinoplasty. Men and women from all walks of life undergo nose correction to improve their face’s aesthetic harmony. A standard rhinoplasty addresses cosmetic and functional issues that can have positive, life-changing consequences.
That said, the minimum age for a rhinoplasty patient is about 16 years old for girls and 17 for boys. This is because, by these ages, the growth plates in the face have finished growing. This means that the nose will not continue to significantly change over time. In other words, by our middle teen years, our noses will look more or less the same for the rest of our lives. Exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis, especially if the goal of surgery is to improve breathing.
If a child goes through puberty at a younger age (14 or 15 years old), Dr. Jacono may perform rhinoplasty earlier. There are also times when a teenager’s appearance is so damaging to their emotional and social growth that surgery can be performed earlier.
Rhinoplasty is the most-requested surgical procedure among teenagers. Sometimes, feelings of embarrassment, unworthiness, and awkwardness can be attributed to nasal appearance. In these cases, a rhinoplasty may help teenagers feel more confident about themselves.
If parents wish to help their teenagers, they should do a few important things. First, they should educate themselves on rhinoplasty. They should then have a conversation with their teenager about why they want the procedure. Lastly, they should research surgeons who have proven abilities.
Rhinoplasty can be a physically and emotionally satisfying operation, especially when teenagers’ expectations are realistic. It is also integral that teenagers be self-motivated about undergoing surgery. It should not be performed to please their parents or to look like a Hollywood star.
Nose surgery is not usually painful. During surgery, patients are sedated with twilight anesthesia. This means that they will be unconscious during surgery, and unable to feel pain.
Immediately after the procedure, Dr. Jacono places a small splint on the nose to protect it from damage. Patients wear this splint for at least 5 days. Dr. Jacono does not place packing in the nose, as it can make recovery more painful. He recommends that your teen avoid blowing their nose for up to 7 days.
In the immediate aftermath of surgery, your teen may experience bruising and minor swelling in the eye area. Cold compresses can reduce discomfort.
Dr. Jacono has seen countless teen patients blossom in school and become more socially connected after their rhinoplasty. Some even get better grades and become more emotionally mature and self-confident. For these reasons, Dr. Jacono believes in performing surgery on teens motivated by the right reasons.
Some teenagers may not realize the practical implications of having surgery. Depending on the extent of surgery, teenagers may miss one or two weeks of school. For this reason, you may want to schedule their surgery during extended vacation time.
Teens heal quicker than adults. Final results may take up to one year to appear.
